There have been more than a few times that I've thought about really sweet tattoos. I'm a big design guy, I love to think out eloquent and intricate designs. I've thought of possibly doing a sleeve of a page or section of the bible in greek written out. Regardless, each time I think about getting a tattoo a verse comes to mind in the bible, its not the verse most people think of.
If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it. [Exodus 20:25]
God created our bodies, as a work of art. Each of us was intricately designed by our creator. Every hair, every cell was put together to make something beautiful. There is NOTHING we can add to ourselves or take away from ourselves to make us better. Nothing can make us better looking.
But there's more to it. In the old testament and even today in our culture, religious tattoos have been a mark of Zealous religious people. Its a dedication to their God. In fact, God had his own thing going on with the Jews, it was called circumcision. But now, that Christ has entered in the world and brought us out of the condemnation of the Law, we have been given a circumcision of our hearts. A sacrifice of it. Something cut away. The wants and desires of carnal things. That being said, it seems to me to be a counterproductive way to beautify ourselves through tattoos. I want to display the greatness of God with a little of me involved as possible.
Now there's no biblical reason why we "shouldn't" get tattoos. In fact I would find no condemnation in getting one. But to me its like adding flames to a beautiful car.
